Wonderkid Jeffrey ‘the Bullet’ Herlings recently defended his MX2 world championship after his 14th GP win of the 2013 season in the Czech Republic. He took the title with three rounds to spare, having won every single round of the campaign. He had won his first title in 2012 at the age of just 17, scoring nine GP wins in the season. The Dutchman first rode in the MX2 World Championship in 2010, and enjoyed a spectacular first half of the season before he injured his shoulder. The on-track battles between Jeffrey and teammate Ken Roczen turned out to be a highlight of 2011, with Roczen eventually just pipping Jeffrey to the title. Born in the tiny village of Geldrop, Jeffrey took his first national title in 2002, when he won the Dutch Amateur 65cc Championship. After another 65cc success the following year, he moved through the classes, picking up world and European titles. In 2009, Jeffrey stepped up to the MX2 class where he achieved a respectable second place in the European Championship, and third in the Dutch Open Championship. 30 GP wins for a rider so young has already marked Jeffrey out as one of the greats of the sport. His outstanding skill and potential as a sand racer is particularly impressive and few of those who witnessed it will forget his spectacular performance at Valkenswaard in 2012 when he succeeded in lapping all riders up to second place in one of the motos.
