American Ryan Nyquist turned 34 this year and is still riding at the top level in Dirt and Park events. Since starting his competitive career in 1997, he has won nearly every title in both disciplines at least once and he doesn't look like retiring any time soon, with 2012 seeing an X Games silver medal in Park and a Dirt triumph on the Dew Tour in San Francisco.
Ryan has won 15 X Games medals in both Park and Dirt, and also been victorious at the Gravity Games, Vans Triple Crown, and the King of Dirt contest. He captured his first Dew Cup in Dirt in 2007, finished fifth in 2008, and won the title again in 2009. He also placed fifth overall in the Park standings for 2009 after winning the final stop of the year.
Ryan started riding at the age of three and competed in his first BMX freestyle competition when he was 16. He is still based in his hometown of San Jose, California, where he enjoys spending his time away from contests with his wife and two sons.
Ryan's skill and determination over his long career have made him into an undisputed BMX legend. Despite sticking with his original setup for all that time, no one can come close to emulating his tricks. “Everyone has a different style,” he says, “but what's hard or crazy for one rider may not be for another. Mostly, I don't worry about what others are doing. I worry about me."
