VQS MULLETFISH SURF SERIES
Saturday 8 September
The Mulletfish Surf Series in Hossegor, France, has become a classic over the years and was the third event of the 2012-2013 VQS surf tour.
Volcom teamed up with Ocean and Earth on this one to offer a 1000€ prize money and more prizes than ever. Adding to this a trip in Fiji for whoever wins the 2013 VQS Champs in the ProAm divison, some small but contestable waves, and a hot and sunny day and you sign up 170 surfers before 9 am.
The Forecast being pessimistic for the Sunday, a double podium was the best option to run the 58 heats in one day.
On the North podium, the contest started with the Girls division on a small but rippable righthander while the Squids (10 and Under division) where warming up (or cooling down) on the warzone that begun on the main podium with all kinds of beach games.
They soon opened this one with the tide coming down, with a perfect Squids paradise 2 feet A frame. Everyone was impressed with the level in this division, with proper turns and carves; we will see them for sure on more podiums pretty soon. Thibaut Manson took the win in a disputed final after a long day at the beach.
The Groms division (13 and Under) was full and also quite disputed, but in the end the top seed’s met in the finals in a clash that Marco Mignot won, with Erwan Blouin taking the 2nd place, Imanol Geledan in third and Hugo Graciet in fourth.
Because of the tight schedule we ran only a final on the Air division for preferably the 20 and over competitors and John Junior from Brazil taking the 250€ in first place with a nice fs air reverse.
The Girls finals was also a good one with Maud Le Car taking once again the win (after the Anchoafish two weeks ago) in front of an in form Delia Delanne, and Lucia Martino in third, Claudia Chaudoreille finishing in fourth.
In the Juniors (16 and under) the battle was fierce, with a lot of contestants, a long day and alternating some rounds on the two podiums. Last year World VQS Champ finalist Aldric God lost in the semis due to a frank interference but will get another chance to qualify for the European VQS Champs at the Karramarofish in Anglet.
In the end Costa Rican ripper Leon Glatzer took 4th place, Smiters in 3rd place, Anchoafish winner Charly Termeau finished runner up and Andy Crière took the victory, a brand new 6’6 offered by SUPERbrand and a sweet 250€.
The Pro/Am division saw some fierce competitors and the final saw some lulls with a couple of good sets that you didn’t want to miss to score. Ugo Robin finished in 4th place while “VQS veteran” PV Laborde took 3rd place, William Aliotti 2nd with some nice turns and an air reverse, and PC Distinguin taking the win picking the best waves and destroying them on his way to the beach.
Congrats everyone and a big thank you to you all that came enjoy the day with us, to the staff that did an amazing job, to Ludo for the video, and Mike Pireddu, Jeff Ruiz and Franck Moissonnier for the Photos.
Thanks also to Vitamin Water who kept everyone hydrated all day with free drinks, SeventyOne percent for the sunscreen and extra prizes, Yucky Tofu for the wax, SUPERbrand and Ocean & Earth for sick extra prizes and the support.
See you all soon!
